How One Girl's Story Sparked a Movement: The Journey of the Deborah Foundation
When Deborah was born in 2008, her family was filled with love, but also questions. She was diagnosed with Down syndrome, a condition that remains widely misunderstood across much of Africa. In Ethiopia, families like hers often face a harsh reality like stigma, isolation, and a lack of proper medical and educational support.
Deborah's early life wasn't easy. She underwent two surgeries and spent six long months in an ICU, connected to oxygen, fighting for her life. Her family watched helplessly as the healthcare system around them struggled to provide the care she needed. Therapy options were scarce, specialists were limited, and information was almost non- existent.
But instead of giving up, Deborah's family made a choice: to turn their pain into purpose. In 2019, Ato Abadulla Gemeda and his family founded the Deborah Foundation , the first of its kind in Ethiopia, named after their brave daughter. Their goal was simple but powerful, to support other families walking the same path and to create a future where children with intellectual disabilities are not hidden, but embraced, supported, and celebrated.
Since that day, Deborah Foundation has been working tirelessly to break the silence around Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities. With the motto " Life is so much bigger than self," everything we do is rooted in the belief that inclusion isn't charity, it's justice. Their mission? To ensure no child like Deborah ever feels invisible again, and that no family walks this journey alone.
At the Deborah Foundation, we believe in inclusion with action. Here's how we're making a difference:
Inclusive Education
We've established Debora Academy , where children with intellectual disabilities learn, grow, and thrive in a safe, accepting environment, from kindergarten to vocational training.
Access to Healthcare
We're building a state- of -the- art Pediatric Specialty Clinic & Therapy Center to offer physiotherapy, speech therapy, early intervention, and more — all tailored to each child's needs.
Vocational Training
Our pilot programs help young people with Down syndrome explore their talents and prepare for independent living through skill- based learning.
Advocacy & Awareness
From March with Deborah events to policy advocacy, we work with the government and communities to ensure individuals with disabilities are protected, respected, and included.
A Movement Rooted in Love
Deborah's journey reminds us that one life can ripple into many. What started as a family's struggle has grown into a nationwide push for dignity, rights, and love.
We're not just telling stories, we're rewriting the narrative. And we believe a brighter, more inclusive Ethiopia is possible.
